  18.           BOOT.SYS lets you display one or more menus at boot-up time and
  19.           have different parts of CONFIG.SYS and/or AUTOEXEC.BAT executed
  20.           depending on which menu options you select. Its basic functional-
  21.           ity is similar to the multi-config feature in MS/PC-DOS 6.0, but
  22.           BOOT.SYS goes much further with a nice menu, if/then/else and use
  23.           of variables in CONFIG.SYS, and editing of designated CONFIG.SYS
  24.           lines on-the-fly, just to name a few.

  28.           Shareware Distribution (<ASP>)

  30.           BOOT.SYS is distributed as shareware which means you may try it
  31.           out free of charge if you accept the license agreement in the
  32.           accompanying documentation. If BOOT.SYS serves your needs and you
  33.           keep it installed on your PC after the initial trial period then
  34.           you must register.
  35.  
  36.           You may share BOOT.SYS with your friends and associates and
  37.           upload it to public bulletin boards. Please pass it on unmodified
  38.           in the original archive as BOOTnnn.EXE where nnn is the version
  39.           number. If there are less than 7 characters available for the
  40.           file name then truncate at the end.

  61.           How to Proceed
  62.  
  63.           Create a bootable diskette and try it out; make sure you can edit
  64.           your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. It is very unlikely that
  65.           you will need to use the boot diskette, but you should never make
  66.           any changes to your configuration files without having a working
  67.           bootable diskette.

  69.           Now run the BOOTINST.EXE program. It will
  70.  
  71.             -  ask you for a target directory (It doesn't have to exist but
  72.                it shouldn't have any other files in it.)

  74.             -  extract the following files into the target directory:

  76.                   BOOT.SYS     the menu program to call from CONFIG.SYS
  77.                   BOOT.EXE     a supporting utility
  78.                   BOOT.DOC     the documentation for BOOT.SYS
  79.                   PAUSE.SYS    a utility to aid in debugging complex setups
  80.                   LICENSE.DOC  end user license agreement
  81.                   ORDER.DOC    registration information and order form
  82.                   SITELICE.DOC site license information and order form
  83.                   SHAREBK.AD   an ad for a how-to guide to shareware
  84.                   SAMPLES\     directory with a number of sample files

  86.             -  guide you through the installation
  87.  
  88.             -  create sample configuration files that you can use to try
  89.                out BOOT.SYS right away

  91.             -  create a log file with detailed explanations customized for
  92.                your system

  94.           BOOTINST does NOT make any changes to your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEX-
  95.           EC.BAT files. We have tried our best to make BOOTINST work with
  96.           all configuration files, but it is possible that you have an
  97.           unusual CONFIG.SYS that we did not foresee. We rely on you to
  98.           examine the log file and the sample configuration files. Make
  99.           sure they look reasonable and then copy them over your CONFIG.SYS
  100.           and AUTOEXEC.BAT and reboot.
